The J. B. Well House is owned by Daughters of the Republic of Texas gifted by Mrs. Wells, an organizing member of the Gonzales Chapter. The entire contents of the home were gifted to the Gonzales Chapter providing a history lesson of the settlement of Gonzales when it was Mexico until 1991. Gonzales Chapter preserves the property with grants and tours.
- B. Wells House Tour & 61stCome & Take It Celebration, Gonzales, Texas, Oct. 7 & 8th – View a herd of Longhorns and a period chuckwagon entry in the annual parade (10-7-17). Celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Chisholm Trail with a tour of the J. B. Wells House and Property built from the growth of the cattle industry in Texas. Tour 195 years of furniture and collections including a dresser brought by oxcart to settle the area in 1825, a sugar bowl buried during the Runaway Scrape in 1836 following the fall of the Alamo, and see family treasures accumulated up to 1991. Learn about Mr. Wells’ cattle drive experiences from story tellers, enjoy Dutch Oven cooking, and take pictures with Longhorns (10-7-17 only). Sunday, October 8 – 57th Memorial Service held at 1936 Centennial Memorial Museum (414 Smith Street) program on James Hodges, original settler, 1825.
