The museum, in conjunction with many other local donors have sponsored an 8x28 ft.fire tiled, pressed, sculpted and glazed map of the Chisholm Trail within Oklahoma state boundaries. The map, sculpted by local artist, John Gooden and based on a 1933 map, corrected by Bob Klemme, will feature different glazed colors depicting tribal lands. Between 1872 and 1876, the Wichita cattle pens were one of the busiest stockyards in the country. Constructed under the direction of Shanghai Pierce for the city, the loading pens were 300 x 550 feet, with 15 subdivisions, twenty-seven gates, with four runways and chutes. They held 2,500 head and could handle one hundred and twenty-five carloads a day. The facility, including additional holding pens, took up 14 acres.

Historian Jim Hoy explores how cowboy folk songs were more than entertainment on the lonely prairie. Through trail-driving songs, night-herding songs and bunkhouse or chuckwagon songs, cattle drovers produced a musical culture that still appeals to today's ranchers who have traded their horses for four-wheelers and six-guns for cell phones. Hoy is a retired professor of English at Emporia State University. An authority on the folk life of ranching, he has published 12 books and over 100 articles on the topic.
